IELTS and English tests for study abroad

Most Pakistani students need an English test result before they can enrol abroad, and the band you need depends on two separate requirements: the university's and the visa's. The higher of the two applies. IELTS costs PKR 71,320 in Peshawar and, since March 2026, is computer-delivered only. This page sets out what each country expects and which test is worth taking.

What each country expects

5 destinations
Typical requirements for international applicants. Individual universities set their own, often higher, and most set a minimum in each skill as well as an overall score.

Check the band minimums, not just the overall. The most common reason a Pakistani student has to retake is a 6.5 overall built on a 5.5 in writing. Universities that set a 6.0 minimum in each skill will reject that result, and the overall score cannot compensate.

Which test to take

5 options

IELTS Academic

The default choice for Pakistani applicants and accepted everywhere on this list. Speaking is still face to face with a real examiner, which many students find easier than speaking to a screen. Since 9 March 2026 every IELTS Academic and General Training test in Pakistan is computer-delivered — the paper format has been discontinued — so results now arrive in about three to five days rather than up to thirteen. Booked in Peshawar through the British Council or through AEO, which delivers IDP's tests in Pakistan. The fee in Peshawar is PKR 71,320.

IELTS for UKVI

The same test content, taken at a centre approved for UK visa purposes, with a different result certificate. You need it for UK courses below degree level, such as a foundation year or a pre-sessional English course. For a full degree, standard IELTS Academic is normally sufficient. It costs PKR 72,000 against PKR 71,320 for the standard test, so the price is not the issue — booking the wrong one is. Check what your CAS will state before you book.

PTE Academic

Fully computer-based and marked by algorithm, with results usually within 48 hours. Accepted by all five destinations. Suits students who type fluently and are comfortable speaking into a microphone. The speed of the result makes it valuable when you are close to a deadline.

TOEFL iBT

The long-established American test, still specified by name at some US universities. Results in about 4 to 8 days. Its integrated tasks — read, listen, then speak or write — are harder to prepare for quickly than IELTS, so it rewards students who start early.

Duolingo English Test

Taken at home, around an hour, cheap, results in about two days. Acceptance has widened considerably and it is now taken by many US and Canadian universities. But acceptance is per-university and it is generally not sufficient for visa purposes on its own. Verify with each institution rather than assuming.

How to plan the test into your timeline

The sequencing matters more than the preparation, because test slots and results both take longer than students assume.

  1. Book before you have an offer. Universities issue conditional offers without an English score, so the test is not blocking your application — but it will block your enrolment and your visa if you leave it late.
  2. Allow five to seven weeks between deciding to test and holding the result. Results themselves now take only three to five days, since Pakistan moved to computer-delivered testing in March 2026 — the wait is the test slot, and slots in Peshawar fill weeks ahead.
  3. Leave room for one retake. A large share of candidates sit the test twice. Building that into the plan is the difference between making a September intake and waiting for January.
  4. Take a scored practice test first. It tells you whether you need two weeks of format familiarisation or three months of genuine language work. Those are very different plans and guessing wrong is expensive.

English tests — common questions

6 answers
What IELTS band do I need to study abroad from Pakistan?
For undergraduate study, 6.0 overall covers most of the UK, Canada and Australia. For Masters, plan on 6.5. The USA typically wants 6.5, and German English-taught programmes 6.5. The overall score is only half the answer — most universities also set a minimum in each of the four skills, and a 6.5 overall built on a 5.5 in writing will still be rejected.
Is IELTS or PTE better for Pakistani students?
Neither is easier; they suit different people. IELTS has a human examiner for speaking, which helps students who freeze in front of a microphone. PTE is faster to get results from and is marked consistently by machine, which helps students with clear pronunciation and good typing speed. If you are close to a deadline, PTE's 48-hour turnaround is a real advantage.
Can I study abroad without IELTS?
In limited circumstances. Some universities accept a medium-of-instruction letter confirming your previous degree was taught in English, and some run their own internal English test. German programmes sometimes waive it for applicants with an English-medium bachelor's. But the visa requirement is separate from the university requirement, and a university waiver does not always satisfy the embassy. Treat any 'study abroad without IELTS' offer as something to verify, not to rely on.
How long is an IELTS result valid?
Two years from the test date. It must be valid on the date you enrol, not the date you apply, which catches students who take the test very early and then defer an intake. If your plan might slip by a semester, factor that into when you book.
How many times can I retake IELTS?
There is no limit, and retaking is common — most students improve on a second attempt because they understand the format better. At PKR 71,320 a sitting it is not a cheap experiment, so a scored practice test beforehand is worth the time. Booking a retake before you receive the first result is worth considering when a deadline is close, since slots in Peshawar fill weeks ahead.
How much does IELTS cost in Pakistan?
PKR 71,320 in Peshawar, Islamabad and Karachi, and PKR 71,920 in Lahore, Faisalabad and Multan, for both IELTS Academic and General Training. IELTS for UKVI is PKR 72,000 and IELTS Life Skills is PKR 50,000. The two official providers are the British Council and AEO, which delivers IDP's tests in Pakistan, and they have historically charged the same. Book through their official sites, and confirm the current price before you pay — fees are revised periodically.
