What Australian universities want from a Pakistani applicant

After FSc / HSSC

Direct entry to a bachelor's degree at many universities with strong FSc marks. Some of the Group of Eight universities require a foundation year or a completed first year at a Pakistani university instead.

After a Pakistani bachelor's

A 4-year HEC-recognised degree for most Masters programmes. Australia is relatively flexible about 2-year bachelor's degrees combined with a Pakistani Masters.

The Genuine Student requirement

Since 2024, a written response explaining your circumstances in Pakistan, why this course, why Australia, and what you intend to do afterwards. It is assessed, not a formality, and it is where weak applications fail.

Financial evidence

Living costs plus tuition plus travel. The savings must have a credible source — a sudden large deposit from an unexplained source is a common reason for refusal.

What it costs

Getting the subclass 500 visa

7 stages
  1. Apply to a CRICOS-registered institution and receive a Letter of Offer.
  2. Accept the offer and pay the initial tuition instalment.
  3. Receive your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) — the document the visa application is built around.
  4. Arrange Overseas Student Health Cover for the full length of your stay.
  5. Write your Genuine Student statement, addressing each question the Department asks directly.
  6. Lodge the online application with financial evidence, English results and academic documents.
  7. Complete a medical examination with a panel physician and provide biometrics.
The Genuine Student statement is the application. Australian refusals for Pakistani students overwhelmingly turn on this, not on marks or money. A statement that does not connect your FSc subjects, your chosen course and a plausible career back home reads as a migration application in disguise — and is assessed as one. Note too that the A$2,500 charge is non-refundable if you are refused, and it is set by the date the Department receives your application, not the date you started preparing it.

Working after your degree

The Temporary Graduate visa (subclass 485) lets eligible graduates stay and work temporarily after finishing. Length depends on your qualification level and has been revised repeatedly since 2024, along with the maximum age for applicants. Some regional areas offer longer stays as an incentive to study outside Sydney and Melbourne. Confirm the current rules for your qualification before choosing a course on this basis — this is the fastest-changing part of Australian student policy.

Before you apply

Two things decide whether a Australia application works: whether your documents are attested correctly, and whether your English score meets both the university and the visa requirement. Get those wrong and nothing else you do matters.

Australia — common questions

5 answers
What IELTS score do I need for an Australian student visa?
Generally IELTS 6.0 overall for the visa, raised from 5.5 in 2024, with 6.5 common for Masters entry. Your university may set a higher bar than the visa does, and the higher of the two applies. Some courses also set minimum scores in individual bands, which catches students who have a strong overall score built on a weak writing or speaking result.
How much money do I need to show for an Australian student visa?
A$29,710 in living costs for a single applicant, plus your first year of tuition and return travel. Add the A$2,500 visa charge, which rose from A$2,000 on 1 July 2026 and from A$1,600 the year before. Just as important as the amount is the source: funds should have been in the account for a reasonable period, or have a documented origin such as a property sale or a sponsor's declared income.
What is the difference between GTE and GS?
The Genuine Temporary Entrant requirement was replaced by the Genuine Student requirement in March 2024. GS asks a defined set of questions about your current circumstances, your course choice and your intentions, rather than asking you to prove you intend to leave. In practice it is a more structured test and a badly answered one is harder to recover from.
Can I bring my family on a student visa to Australia?
Dependent family members can be included, but you must show substantially higher funds and the rules on including dependants have tightened. For most Pakistani undergraduate applicants, bringing family is not financially realistic. It is a more serious option for funded postgraduate researchers.
Is regional study in Australia worth considering?
Often, yes. Regional universities charge less, accommodation is significantly cheaper, and regional study has historically carried extra post-study work entitlements. The trade-off is a smaller job market and a smaller Pakistani community. It suits students whose priority is the qualification and the work rights rather than city life.
